4G Bonding vs Starlink: Which is Right for Your Event?

Starlink has changed what is possible for remote event connectivity. But it is not always the right choice. Here is an honest comparison of bonded 4G/5G versus satellite for event use.

Since Starlink became widely available for temporary and portable use, it has transformed what is achievable for events in remote locations. But it's not a universal replacement for bonded cellular — and choosing the wrong backhaul technology for your event can result in either a network that underperforms or a bill that is significantly higher than it needed to be.

Here's an honest comparison of both technologies, based on real-world event deployments across the UK and Europe.

Bonded 4G/5G: How It Works

Bonded cellular combines multiple SIM cards from different mobile network operators into a single aggregated connection. Rather than relying on any single network — which might be congested or have poor coverage at your site — bonding spreads load across several networks simultaneously.

The result is a connection that is significantly more resilient than a single SIM, and with throughput that scales with the number and quality of the SIM cards in use. A well-designed bonded setup with 8 SIM cards across 4 networks can deliver 200–400 Mbps aggregate bandwidth in areas with good coverage.

Starlink: How It Works

Starlink is a low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet service. Unlike traditional geostationary satellite internet — which has latency of 500–700ms because of the enormous distance to the satellite — Starlink satellites orbit at around 550km altitude, reducing latency to 20–60ms. This makes it genuinely usable for real-time applications including video conferencing, live streaming, and VoIP.

Starlink's Flat High Performance terminal (the square dish used for portable deployments) delivers 100–500 Mbps download and 10–40 Mbps upload under good sky conditions, with a monthly data plan that suits temporary use.

When Bonded 4G/5G Wins

Good mobile coverage at the site. If your site has reliable 4G or 5G signal from multiple networks, bonded cellular is usually the most cost-effective backhaul option. It's lower latency than Starlink in good conditions, scales well, and doesn't require clear sky visibility.

Upload-heavy applications. Live video contribution (ENG, REMI production) benefits from the upload characteristics of bonded cellular, particularly when using a device like the Kiloview P3 which is specifically designed to bond cellular uplinks for broadcast.

Cost sensitivity. Starlink hardware and data plans add meaningful cost compared to a SIM-card-only bonded setup. For events where cellular coverage is adequate, bonded 4G/5G usually delivers better value.

No clear sky requirement. Trees, buildings, and structures can obstruct the Starlink dish. Cellular works in partially obstructed environments where Starlink struggles.

When Starlink Wins

Remote locations with poor mobile coverage. If your site is in a valley, a rural area, or a location where even a single mobile network struggles, Starlink is the answer. It works anywhere with a clear view of the sky, regardless of what the mobile networks are doing.

Primary or redundancy backhaul. Many professional event networks use both: bonded cellular as the primary connection and Starlink as automatic failover. This combination delivers exceptional resilience — if the cellular networks are congested by 10,000 phones at a festival, Starlink takes over.

Large bandwidth requirements in low-coverage areas. A single Starlink terminal can deliver more bandwidth than a cellular connection in a poor-coverage area. For events that need 100+ Mbps in the middle of nowhere, Starlink is often the only practical option.

The Honest Answer

For most UK and European events, the answer is both — used in combination. Bonded cellular provides your primary high-throughput connection in areas with coverage; Starlink provides resilience and additional capacity where cellular is weak.
