Festival WiFi: How Many Access Points Do You Actually Need?

Getting your access point count wrong is the most common cause of festival WiFi failure. Here is how to calculate the right number — and why the answer is probably not what your venue told you.
The question we get asked most often when quoting for festival WiFi is also the one with the most misleading obvious answer: "How many access points do I need?"
The instinct is to divide your attendee count by some number — often pulled from a manufacturer's spec sheet — and use that as your access point count. This approach produces networks that fail, every time. Here's why, and what to do instead.
Why Manufacturer Specs Are Misleading
An enterprise access point manufacturer might claim their unit supports 512 or even 1,024 simultaneous client associations. This is technically true under ideal laboratory conditions. In a festival field, you will never get anywhere close to this number of active, functional connections per AP.
The real-world ceiling per access point in a high-density outdoor environment — where you have interference from neighbouring APs, festival production equipment, lighting rigs, and thousands of phones trying to associate simultaneously — is closer to 50–80 concurrent active data sessions per AP before performance degrades noticeably.
The difference between 512 and 60 is the difference between a network that looks fine on paper and a network that collapses under load.
Concurrent Users vs Total Attendees
The second critical distinction is between total attendees and concurrent WiFi users. Not everyone at your festival will use the WiFi network. At most UK music festivals, somewhere between 10–25% of attendees will actively use the festival WiFi at any given moment. The rest will either use their own mobile data, not use any data at all, or use WiFi only briefly.
Your design target should be concurrent active users, not total headcount. A 10,000-person festival might realistically need to support 1,500–2,500 concurrent users. That's a very different design problem to supporting 10,000.
The Real Calculation
A sensible starting formula for outdoor festival WiFi design is: (total attendees × estimated WiFi adoption rate) ÷ 60 = minimum access point count.
For a 10,000-person festival with a 20% adoption rate: 10,000 × 0.20 = 2,000 concurrent users. 2,000 ÷ 60 = approximately 34 access points as a minimum. In practice, we would add 30–40% headroom and factor in the physical layout, so a realistic deployment might be 45–55 access points across the site.
This number changes significantly based on site layout. A compact site with most people in one area needs more APs concentrated in a small space. A spread-out site with multiple stages needs APs distributed across a wider area.
Other Factors That Affect Your Count
Backhaul capacity. Having 50 APs is meaningless if your internet backhaul can't deliver enough bandwidth. Budget at least 1 Mbps per concurrent user as a starting point for general browsing and social media, more if you're expecting heavy video streaming.
Network separation. If you're running vendor payment systems, production networks, and public WiFi on the same infrastructure, you need separate SSIDs and VLANs — which affects how you configure and load-balance your APs.
RF interference. Outdoor festivals generate significant RF interference from production equipment. A pre-event spectrum analysis helps identify which channels are cleanest and where to place APs to minimise co-channel interference.
The bottom line: trust a specialist to design your festival WiFi, not a spec sheet. The maths is straightforward once you know the right numbers to use — the problem is that the obvious numbers are usually the wrong ones.
